UK must stockpile food in readiness for climate shocks or war, expert warns

A recent report by The Guardian warns that the UK should consider stockpiling food to prepare for climate shocks or potential conflicts.

This is a timely reminder that food security is no longer only a development issue — it is a national resilience issue.

With the UK producing only about 54% of the food it consumes, global disruptions—from climate extremes to geopolitical tensions—can quickly expose vulnerabilities in food supply systems.

At the @Food for All Africa UK Centre for Sustainable Nutrition and Innovation, we believe the conversation must go beyond stockpiling.

The real opportunity is to build future-ready food systems that focus on:

• Sustainable and resilient food production

• Reducing food loss and waste

• Nutrition security for vulnerable communities

• Youth-led Innovation and climate-smart solutions

From Africa to Europe, resilient food systems will define how well societies withstand the shocks of the future.

Food security is no longer optional.

It is essential infrastructure.
