From One Moment to Millions of Meals

Food for All Africa began with a single, unforgettable moment.

In 2011, our founder, Elijah Amoo Addo, encountered a man searching for food in a bin on the streets of Accra. That moment sparked a question that would go on to shape a movement: How can so much food go to waste while so many people go hungry?

From that question, Food for All Africa was born — West Africa’s first and largest circular food bank in Ghana, leading the transformation of food systems through an innovative circular food banking model that supports surplus food recovery, climate resilience, improved livelihoods, and access to safe, nutritious meals for underserved populations.

Over the past decade, what started as a simple act of compassion has grown into a nationally recognised and globally respected model for fighting hunger and food waste.

A defining moment came in 2017, when Elijah Addo received the Queen’s Young Leaders Award from Queen Elizabeth II. This recognition affirmed that the model we had built in Ghana was not only impactful — it was scalable, innovative, and globally relevant. Today, Food for All Africa stands as proof that local solutions can drive global change.

Why We’re in the UK

Our expansion into the United Kingdom is not just growth — it’s a response to urgent need. Despite being one of the world’s wealthiest nations, the UK is facing a deepening food insecurity crisis. Today:
1 in 6 households experience food insecurity
Millions rely on food banks to get by
Even working families are increasingly affected
But the crisis is not experienced equally.

Research shows that African and Minority Ethnic (AME) communities are disproportionately impacted:

24% of Black households experience food insecurity
Compared to 13% of White households
At the same time, many mainstream food banks struggle to provide:
Culturally appropriate food
Nutrition education tailored to diverse communities
Dignified choice based food access and recipes
This is where Food for All Africa UK is uniquely positioned to lead.
